SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – West Chester’s women’s rugby squad defeated Shippensburg, 12-5 Thursday evening in a non-league match under the lights in Shippensburg, Pa.
The Golden Rams (3-0) remained undefeated on the season while handing the Raiders their first loss of the year. The 3-0 start is the best in school history since West Chester opened 4-0 in 2005-06.
Katy Black registered her third try of the season eight minutes into the contest, and Beverly Schmitz scored a converted try in the 30th minute to give the visitors a 12-0 lead at halftime. Whitney Hartshorne posted the two points on the conversion.
Black’s try was the 15th of her illustrious career. The All-American is one of the school’s all-time leaders in trys. Schmitz’s try was the second of her career.
Shippensburg fought back with a try by Melissa Hutchinson in the second half, but that was all the hosts could muster against West Chester’s defense.
West Chester will attempt to equal its best start in school history on Sunday, Oct. 14 when the Golden Rams host Penn State at 2 p.m.
